House adjourns here after extraordinary session.

Capitol Hill, Liberia, May 2, 2024โ€”The House of Representatives has adjourned its special extraordinary session of the first session with the enactment of two laws. The special extraordinary sitting was part of the firstย quarter of the 55th Legislature.ย 

According to the Legislative Press Bureau, President Joseph N. Boakai recalled the 55th Legislature from break on April 1, 2024, for urgent business.

The President proclaimed the 55th Legislature through the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, for the body return to conduct business from 1 April to 30 April 2024.

President Boakai used Article 32 (b) to extend the session. The provision states that the President shall, on his initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House and by proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment.

The provision also states that the President shall call an extraordinary session of the body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concern. 

The provision says, โ€œWhen the extension or call is at the request of the Legislature, the proclamation shall be issued not later than forty-eight hours after receipt of the certificate by the President.โ€

ย President Boakai said the recall of the Legislature is based on critical national issues that must be resolved urgently.ย

During this special session, the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate discussedย andย actedย upon matters of national emergency, including the fiscal year 2024 draft national budget.

Giving a statistical report on the Extraordinary session, Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah said 19 sessions were held, comprising 10 regular sessions, 4 executive or secret sessions, 4 leadership sessions, and a special setting, 1.

He said the total number of bills passed during the Extraordinary session included 1 from the Executive, while there were four leadership meetings, bills, Resolutions, and Petitions left in the Committee room, 15, besides 5 appearances.

Meanwhile, members of the House are expected to resume work for the second quarter on the third working Friday, 16 May 2024. Press Release
