14 Specialists Due For JFK
The John F. Kennedy Medical Center has disclosed that several specialists from the United States are due in the country shortly to perform free medical and surgical services for Liberians.
According to a press release from the JFK Medical Center, the coming of the doctors is in response to an appeal by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf during her recent visit to the United States. The hospital said that all surgical procedures during the course of their stay will be absolutely free.
“The public is hereby encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity that we are about to give to the Liberia people. These doctors will be here for about two weeks and will offer free surgical procedures to Liberians, especially males with prostate problems. Please make use of the opportunity” Dr. Wvannie Scott-McDonald, General Administrator of the JFK said.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Billy Johnson, emphasized that while in the country, the doctors will look at all male and female related problems that require specialized care and also noted that all cases will be performed in collaboration with JFK Medical Center doctors.
The doctors: Gynecologist, Plastic Surgeon, Urologist, Pediatrician, Internist, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) amongst other interest are coming to Liberia to help address some of the highly complex cases that are referred to the Center nationally.
Dr. Johnson explained the various disciplines of the doctors as follow: Obstetrics/gynecology, saying it is a branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially pregnancy, and the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs; Urology he noted, is a medical and surgical specialty that focuses on the urinary tracts of males and prostate problems, including female urinary problems.
The organs covered by urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary, urethra, and the male reproductive organs testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis.
Dr. Johnson further explained that Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, and Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke and cancer, while Neurosurgery is a surgical specialty dealing with the brain, spine, particularly in stroke victims and in those involved in motorbike/motor vehicle accident.
A Spine, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist is also expected.
The Medical Center however said that while all the surgical procedures will be free, minimal fees will be charged for drugs and diagnostic procedures. The surgeons are expected to be in the country for two weeks.
