5 drown in Yar River

At least five persons have reportedly drowned in the Yar River between electoral district # 7 and 8 in Nimba County. The incident occurred Sunday, September 27, when a boat carrying nine passengers along with two motorcycles capsized, leaving five of the nine occupants drowned in the river.

The NewDawn Nimba correspondent said, none of the victims’ body was recovered up to press time yesterday. The Yar River between Gba Clan and Saclepea, provides the only crossing point for citizens of Gba to get to Saclepea and other parts of Nimba.
This is the first major incident, involving deaths between the two districts. Citizens of Gba Clan have reportedly engaged their past and current lawmakers, including county authorities to do something about the crossing point, but they have allegedly failed to address the problem.

According to them, only Representative Larry Younquoi visited them few weeks ago and asked them to remain peaceful, while he engages national government to construct a bridge over the Yah River to avoid a re-occurrence of such tragedy.

During a visit by this paper to the scene, the victims’ corpses were still in the river, while other citizens were still crossing in boat, which is the only means of transportation from one town or village to another. By Franklin Doloquee, Nimba – Edited by Jonathan Browne
