AFL Candidate dies during a military fitness test

The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) says a male candidate who was in the screening process of the AFL’s 2022 Recruitment Drive has died.

A release issued by the Ministry of Defense last week said the incident occurred during screening process for the Western Region (Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, and Bomi Counties) conducted in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.

“The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, during the Initial Physical Fitness Test (IPFT) exercises,” the Defense Ministry said.

The unnamed deceased collapsed during the 1.5-mile run and was given first aid care by members of the AFL Medical Team assigned with the Recruitment Team and was rushed to the Bomi Government Hospital, the release added.

He was pronounced dead after many attempts to revive him by medical staff at the Bomi Government Hospital failed. The family/next of kin of the deceased was immediately contacted, the authorities have said.

The Ministry of National Defense and the Armed Forces of Liberia said they regret this sad incident and wish to encourage the family that their son lost his life for a noble cause.

“He was a patriot who volunteered to join the AFL in service to his country, Liberia. The Honorable Minister of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia extend to the family of the deceased their deepest sympathy in this great loss,” the release said.
