Assistant Minister seeks support for youth development

The Assistant Minister for Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Kula Fofana, is urging the Government of Liberia and other partners to direct more funds to Youth Development across the Country.

According to Minister Fofana, the funds will enable the Ministry of Youth and Sports implement strategic programs under its Youth Development component, with specific focus on youth empowerment and employment.

She said the Ministry of Youth and Sports has a plan to build the capacity of teenage girls who are engaged in prostitution – something, she said, can be swiftly done when resources are available.

Speaking to this paper in an interview, she also named youth capacity-building in Agriculture and improving their intellectual skills as some of the long term developments the Ministry wants to implement.

She said the Ministry of Youth and Sports has launched the third phase of the National cadet program with over one hundred and eight young People benefiting. “Beneficiaries of the cadet program have been assigned at various ministries and agencies to enable them contribute to national development,” she noted.

According to her, the Ministry was contemplating bringing back the vacation job program for high school students as a means of reducing financial burdens on Parents. She cautioned young People across the Country to work collaboratively to help maintain the Country’s peace ahead of the 2017 elections.

Ahead of the 2017 Presidential and Representative elections, Minister Fofana has also stressed the need for Young People to do away with vices that could lead to potential electoral violence.
