Bomi Muslims write UNMIL, Legislative Caucus

The Association of Mandingos and Muslims in Bomi County has petitioned the Bomi’s Legislative Caucus, UNMIL, Civil Society Group of Bomi and the National Muslim Council of Liberia to intervene in the immediate release of one of their sons, allegedly kidnapped and forcefully initiated into the traditional fraternity, Poro Society of Bomi.

A release from the group says the 23 years old male victim remains in custody of the Poro, after many unsuccessful attempts to have the police and county administration intervene for his release. 

The victim, who is reportedly being initiated against his will and religious faith,

was allegedly kidnapped while riding in a motorcycle in broad daylight in Sakie Town, Senjeh District, Bomi County.

The association also wants the Ministry of Internal Affairs that has taken charge of the case and reportedly detained the ring leader of the act, to refer the matter to court.

Bomi County Superintendent Samuel Browne however clarified that the ministry took charge of the case because of its sensitive and traditional nature, adding the alleged perpetrator, Seth Johnson, has been suspended, detained and fined by the ministry after an investigation.

But the Association of Mandingos and Muslims has rejected the Ministry’s action, terming it as inappropriate, tantamount to interference with the law, and promotes human rights violation.

According to the association, no amount of fine can substitute for justice and the psychological pains the victim has endured.
