Bong citizens frown at Weah for ignoring War Crimes Court

Several residents of Bong County have expressed serious frustrations that President George Manneh Weah ignored calls for the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court here.

Our correspondent says Liberians in Bong Count began expressing their frustration following President Weah’s Second State of the Nation Address delivered on Monday, 28 January at the Legislature.

In the address, President Weah simply reminded Liberians that the peace they enjoy today remains fragile and others have made sacrifices for it with their resources.

But he downplayed the call to establish a War Crimes Court here, in spite of a longstanding campaign to ensure that people who committed war crimes are held to account for their actions.

Prior to his address on Monday, our correspondent says many Liberians in the centrally located County were waiting to hear President Weah say something about citizens’ calls for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.

But to their dismay, the President ignored the call. Many of those concerned about the Court took part in a phone-in talk show program on local radio, KWATEKEH FM in Bong County on Tuesday, saying they were not motivated by President Weah’s address.

A lot of the callers say the address did not serve as a motivational factor for the improvement of the country because President Weah ignored the war crimes court issue.

The citizens say the see the establishment of the court as a way of giving hope to those who were victimized during the 14 years of civil unrest in the Country.

Apparently due to their frustration over the war crimes court issue, some of the callers even accuse President Weah of not meaning well for the Liberian people, claiming that his speech created uncertainty among Liberians who are yearning for a developed country. The Bong County citizens are urging President Weah to act on promises he made during the campaign period.
