Cabinet endorses amendment for Executive Law

The Liberian Cabinet has unanimously endorsed an amendment to Chapter 89 of the Executive Law – thereby repealing No. 14 of the People’s Redemption Council of the Armed Forces of Liberia to an Act establishing the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP).

The cabinet also mandated the Ministry of Public Works to prioritize key projects and received briefing on the current economicmanagement outlook. According to an Executive Mansion release, the proposed amendment, once effectuated, shall be applied to the President, Vice President, Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives, Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, President Pro-Tempore and Members of the Liberian Senate and Members of the Cabinet.

Following updates from Public Works, the cabinet also mandated that amid the ensuing dry season – works on the 80km Fish Town – Karloken; 66km Harper to Karloken be prioritized, while the ongoing designs on the 81km Gbarnga – Salayea; 72km Sanniquellie – Dannane; S.D. Cooper – Coco Cola Factory 6km be fast-tracked.

The cabinet was briefed that EU funding for the maintenance of Buchanan to Cestos City road is going through the procurement process, while additional road works will see the opening of a total of 78 alleys with a total length of 63.54km from ELWA Junction to Marshall Junction. 

The cabinet also received updates on the Ministerial Complex, Capitol Building Extension, Marshall Road project, Gbarmato Weasua road project, continuation of demolition of Barnesville – Caldwell road, rigid pavement pilot project on the Redemption road as well as the Sinkor streets asphalt rehabilitation project.

Meanwhile, in its determination to remain focused on the current economic trend, the cabinet received updates on the existing economic outlook in furtherance of the think-tanking under the auspices of the Economic Management Team (EMT).

It was briefed on economic policies, revenue projections – working with the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) and the LiberiaTelecommunication Authority (LTA) – in view of proposed amendment to the Revenue Code, as well as the Government Service Tax on goods and services.

It was brought up to speed on the current engagement with the logging sector regarding agreeable partnership that will address infrastructural challenges in their concession areas pertaining to road and bridge maintenance. The Economic Management Team underscore the significance of 5% cuts in the budgetary allocations of Ministriesand Agencies of government.

On the agri-processing and manufacturing fronts, the cabinet was briefed on the agriculture sector within the context of guarantee scheme – redefining the tax mobilization strategies and the need to infuse dynamism in the sector towards value addition. Press release
