At least five passengers are reported dead following a motor accident in Gbatala, Bong County. The county was the scene of grief over the weekend as residents wept bitterly, while others consoled family members of the deceased.
Preliminary investigation conducted by the Liberia National Police detailed that the vehicle crash occurred near Gbartala, Yellequelleh District in Bong County.
According to the police, a truck with license plate TT 1888 operated by Alieu Fofana was traveling from Monrovia to Nimba County, transporting huge quantity of cement bags with 12 persons on board, including the driver lost control and somersaulted into a ditch.
Police authorities and eyewitnesses said two of the 12 passengers onboard instantly died on the scene, while another died subsequently at the Gbatala Police Station, and the fourth person died while en route to the Phebe Hospital in Suacoco Bong County.
The fifth victim was reported dead on Sunday, 9 June at the same hospital. The dead include Richald M. Dahn, Ku Owell, Ya Gapeh and Joseph Kamara. The fifth victim was not immediately identified.
Meanwhile, one of the remaining seven survivals is said to be in critical condition, while another has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit at the Phebe Hospital.
Four persons were reportedly discharged with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck Aleiu Fofana, who fled the scene after the accident, is said to be currently in police custody in Gbarnga, Bong County. Police authorities in Gbartala and Gbarnga said the cause of the accident is being investigated.
The Chief of Traffic of the Liberia National Police, John Malayah Saar, said he was in close communication with his traffic inspectors in the field and will release more findings to the public following the conclusion of the investigation.
