CARI employees demand salary increment

Research Assistants at the Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI) are demanding the Institution’s board to increase their salaries.

Three of the 21 Research Assistants including Sampson Kerkulah, Pricellia Watson and Alice Kongoh appeared as guests on Kwatekeh Radio’s Neat Breakfast Show in Gbarnga, Bong County Wednesday, 5 September to express serious bitterness over CARI’s alleged refusal to increase their salaries.

Many Research Assistants at CARI are said to be marginalized amidst alleged salary disparities there.

According to the three Research Assistants, it is disheartening for them as university graduates to work for an institution like CARI without any improvement in their lives.
They state that if the Board of CARI doesn’t see reason to increase their salaries, they will stage peaceful protest to draw the attention of other government officials.

The CARI Research Assistants are calling on Bong County Legislative Caucus to intervene in this matter if their works at CARI should continue.

The aggrieved Research Assistants say they are currently earning US$180, complaining that it is not sufficient.

“The money we’re making is very little. All the monies can be used on transportation, so if the officials of the institution do not want problem, they must adhere to our concerns now!” the aggrieved CARI workers say.

“We have spoken to the Director about our concern, but he has not told us anything about the issue,” they add.

CARI Director General Dr. Marcus Jones has been contacted on the matter, but his office says he will make official response later.

The Central Agriculture Research Institute is currently managed by a Director General who reports directly to the Minister of Agriculture in a centralized coordination system.

CARI was created in 1980 from the Central Agricultural Experiment Station to conduct both adaptive and applied research in agriculture.
