The Catholic Bishop Conference says the Church has decided a new mechanism to foster mutual relationship between the church and the state.
During a meeting with House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, along with some members of the Liberian Senate and House of Representatives at the Capitol Building in Monrovia, the Roman Catholic Bishops said they preferred to dialogue with the Liberian Government on national challenges as a means of contributing to amicable solutions.
Archbishop Jerome Lewis Zegler, Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Liberia and the Monrovia Archdiocese, led the ecumenical delegation accompanied by the Bishop from the Catholic Gbarnga Diocese, Rev. Father Anthony F. Bowah, and Monsignor Andrew J. Karnley, Bishop from the Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas, amongst others.
Archbishop Zegler, during the meeting, told Speaker Chambers that the Catholic Church in Liberia intends to work with the Liberian Government by means of peaceful knowledge sharing on some of the governance challenges of the country and offer prayers to God Almighty where need be for divine intervention.
Bishop Andrew J. Karnley asserted during the meeting that the Catholic Bishop Conference may be considering appointing a Priest who will serve as the Church’s liaison to the Government of Liberia and shall be charged with the responsibilities to lead dialogue efforts when national issues are raised. Bishop Karnley further indicated that such liaison will also do follow-ups with Government on those issues of concern that will be agreed upon with the Church as a partner to government.
For his part, Rev. Father Anthony F. Bowah, Bishop of the Gbarnga Diocese, told the gathering that the Church has resolve to shape the paradigm in its engagements with Government from issuing pastoral letters of condemnations to constructively engaging through dialogue to resolving some critical issues.
Meanwhile, House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers says he welcomes the Catholic Church’s new approach on its chosen to engage Government constructively. Speaker assures the Catholic Bishop Conference about the Legislature readiness to work with them in their quest to make Liberia a better place for all humanity, where good governance, justice, peace and prosperity will be kindled on discipline and mutual respect. Speaker Chambers himself is a Communicant Catholic and belongs to the St. Francis Catholic Church in the Diocese of Cape Palmas, Maryland County.
