CEPDE launches climate change campaign

A local group here, Center for Peace and Development Effectiveness or CEPDE, is expected to launch a campaign against “social injustice and climate change,” in Monrovia, Program Coordinator Mr. Samuel Chanchan, has announced in a release.

The local group says it is launching a global sensitization, mobilization and advocacy campaign in Monrovia today, January 15, 2015 named “action/2015” at the Slipway Field on Water Street, characterized by parade in the principal streets.

The local advocates say their campaign is directed at ending poverty, inequality, climate change and discrimination; adding that the campaign has nationally attracted the attention of many civil society organizations.

Today’s launch will follow pending sensitization and mobilization events in Gbarnga and Buchanan in February and March 2015, respectively, the release said.

The group is having fear that the number of people living in extreme poverty could actually increase to 1.2 billion by 2030, if leaders failed to deliver and build on the growing momentum for ambitious deals at the UN Special Summit on Sustainable Development in September and the UN Climate talks in Paris in December and scale back their efforts.

CEPDE said it expects several dignitaries at the launch, including President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Montserrado County Senator George Weah, and several others.
