Chichi Gold Foundation, a charity in Liberia says it has concluded plans to help rehabilitate wayward people referred to here as “Zogos” by providing them vocational training, health treatments, and apprenticeship training.
Zogos, is a locally coined word for criminals and drug users, who roam the streets of Monrovia and its environs, doing odd jobs such as car loading and washing, while snatching mobile phones and other valuables from peaceful citizens. These drug addicts are mostly found in ghettos and at street corners, waiting on preys.
Chief Executive Officer Madam Robertline Blamo, says besides training, the Foundation will provide sponsorship to those desiring higher education.She says this was the dream of the Foundation founder, the late Aletha Chengo Blamo, who died in a motor accident on Saturday, September 9, 2018 in Brewerville Township, Montserrado County.
The late Aletha earned a BSc Degree in Sociology and Public Administration from the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) on Camp Johnson Road, in Monrovia on June 13, 2018.
Madam Robertline, who is a junior sister of the deceased, says the Foundation is determined in taking ‘Zogos’ off the streets to make them useful citizens.“Therefore, the need to afford them the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the growth and development of Liberia cannot be overemphasized”, she notes.
Robertline told journalists after a daylong distribution exercise with some Zogos on Benson Street in Monrovia, with over 700 ghettos across the country, Chichi Gold Foundation is determined to ensure every wayward person is captured.
“The food giveaway is the first point of contact with these underprivileged citizens as a means of gaining their trust and giving them the reassurance that although Chichi is dead, her dream to see them become better in the society did not die.”
Richard Gaydual and Daniel Bracewell on behalf of their colleagues thank the Foundation for its determination to get them (zogos) off the streets and transform their lives.“We are tired of being addicted youth who roam the streets, snatching phones and other valuables from people and at the sometimes, have no homes but rather use the ghettos as homes. Therefore, we are not happy with such life and condition but it is the only way for us to survive,” they lament.
