Citizens attend peace forum in Nimba

The Liberia Peace Building Office [PBO] along with the Ministry of Internal Affairs ends two days forum on non-violence in Flumpa, Electoral District#8, Nimba County under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme [UNDP].

Citizens of the area were at each other’s throats during the 2017 elections, especially after poll results in the district ended in dispute with aggrieved parties running to the Supreme Court.

The High Court subsequently brought down its opinion which favored incumbent Representative Larry P. Younquoi against his rival Saye S. Maneh.  The forum brought together six of the nine candidates who contested in the district, including Melvin Sendolo Garpeh, Jackson Fildor, Rufus N. Mandein, Ben Zonmia and Representative Larry P. Younquoi. They all pledge to work towards peace in the district.

The Executive Director for the Liberia Peace Building Office, Edward Mulbah says the engagement was intended for citizens to learn to do away with conflict in order to live together peacefully like before, after the elections.

He stresses that election has come and gone, so citizens should live together in peace and unity, adding that when citizens are united rather than in disarray, national government would be able to carry out development in their area.

Liberia’s Peace Ambassador William R. Tolbert, Jr. similarly urges the citizens to forget the past and embrace peace by working with their incumbent lawmaker now that elections are over.

‘’You people need to join your leader to undertake development that will help to improve your living condition”, he pleads. Meanwhile, at the close of the forum, participants came up with a resolution, among others, agreeing to hold town hall meetings and sporting activities to unite the local population.

District#8 lawmaker Larry P. Younquoi promises to work with all members of his constituency to develop the district. He notes that if the people are united, it would make it easier for him to properly represent the district in House of Representatives.
