The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) says its police have arrested a total of 14 persons between Wednesday and Thursday this week for illegally and indiscriminately disposing waste.
According to a release issued by the MCC on Thursday, 9 August, City Police arrested 10 persons following initial arrests of four persons on Wednesday, 8 August for illegal waste disposal.
The city government says in a release that a total of 14 persons were being fined US$50.00 each for illegally and indiscriminately disposing waste. The City Corporation observes that these acts were committed in Monrovia within 48 hours since the enforcement exercise commenced here.
Illegal disposal of garbage in Monrovia violates the city ordinance # 1 Section 3, 5 and 10 which speak against littering and promote cleanliness. According to the release, a Pakistani who is also a renowned businessman in Liberia was arrested for indiscriminate waste disposal.
Those arrested are Armmed Massaquoi, age 47; Willie Nbebah, age 46; Wilson Zennieh, age 24; Princess Flomo, age 22; Mohammed Abdul, age 22; and Nevia Jallah, age 23.
Others are Mustapha Sesay, age 45; Emmanuel Duo, age 15; Emmanuel Flomo, age 17 and Kerco Bropleh, age 40. The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) says the US$50.00 fine against each of those arrested must be paid into the revenue covers of the City Government.
The City Government warns that failure on the part of the affected persons to pay this amount, it will have no other alternative but to take them to the Monrovia City Court for prosecution.
According to authorities of the corporation, this will serve as deterrence for would be violators.The MCC warns that it is not taking this issue of illegal and indiscriminate waste disposal by residents lightly and has deployed city police officers at every skip bucket location in Monrovia to track those individuals who are in the constant habit of illegally disposing dirt.–Press release
