The government of Liberia has begun disbursing the July salaries of civil servants across country according to reports emerging from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
The delay in the payment of civil servants salaries has been one of the major woes of the Coalition for Democratic Change or CDC government with reports in some quarters that civils servants have not taken pay for between 3 to four months.
But reports say as at last week government employees began receiving text messages from various banks indicating that their accounts have been credited with their July salaries.
A source from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning told this paper over the weekend that though a month late, civil servants July salaries are hitting their accounts according to the government’s rollout plan which focuses on key ministries to include Health, Education and the security sectors.
Since the commencement of the wage harmonization exercise by the Ministry of Finance and the Civil Service Agency, there has been slight delays in the payment of monthly salaries, especially for the month of June and July. The new wage harmonization which combines salaries and allowances into one, is expected to provide equitable payment of salaries across different jobs and classifications in government, at least according to the government. The measure it said will offer increases amongst low wage earners in government.
The government said as part of its harmonization plan, it will also begin the automation of the payroll method to streamline the process by removing ghost names from the system. Under this new payroll system, it said all employees will be required to present their National Identity Registration (NIR) before accessing their salaries from the banks.
To stimulate the struggling Liberian economy, the Liberian government said it has attached seriousness to the regular payment of salaries to allow employees address their basic economic and social needs. According to sources at the Ministry of Finance, the Government is also exploring ways and means to settle some of its domestic indebtedness to vendors.
