Monrovia, January 30, 2025: The National County Sports Meet, one of Liberia’s most cherished sporting events, has lost significant excitement following the unexpected elimination of major contenders.
Some of Liberia’s most populous counties, including Nimba County and Grand Bassa County, and less populated counties, such as Grand Kru County, have been eliminated from the match.
Nimba exited the tournament after a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to Margibi County following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Grand Kru suffered an early exit after back-to-back group-stage defeats, losing 2-1 to Grand Gedeh County and 1-0 to Margibi County.
Grand Bassa was eliminated after losing a protest against Bomi County due to a late filing.
Reports suggest that administrative disputes and player eligibility issues contributed to some of these eliminations.
However, tournament officials have remained tight-lipped about the specific details.
The elimination of these teams—known for their passionate fan bases and strong performance has significantly impacted the tournament, causing a noticeable decline in attendance and enthusiasm.
Despite the reduced excitement, matches continue. Maryland lost to Grand Gedeh County 3-2, while Margibi County is set to face Lofa in an upcoming fixture.
