Cuba celebrates 59th anniversary of revolution

The Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Liberia yesterday celebrated their 59th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution.

The Charge d’ Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba near Monrovia Yordenis Despaigne Vera, describes the 59th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution as a historical moment.

He says the people of Cuba are proud of the legacy of the heroes of the struggles for independence and faithful to the thought of the historical leader of the Revolution the late Fidel Castro.

Speaking Wednesday, 17 January during the ceremony held at the Cuban Embassy, Mr. Vera says despite the considerable damages caused by an intense drought, the devastating consequences of Hurricane Irma and also the financial and commercial blockade by the current U.S. administration, Cuba showed again significant results in all spheres of economic and social life, while the country continued its solidarity work with other nations.

However, he notes that the Hurricane Irma that hit Cuba last September was the most powerful meteorological event in the history of the Atlantic and affected 12 provinces of the 16 Cuban provinces, adding that the hurricane caused economic losses that exceeded US$13 million, with damages to educational, cultural, health and tourist facilities as well as roads, electrical and telecommunications networks besides affecting more than 179 thousand homes, among other consequences.

“Last year there was a significant setback in the bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States of America due to the return to hostile policy by Trump Administration against my country and the approval of new measures to intensify the unjust and illegal economic blockade imposed on the Cuban people, including new restrictions on the right of US citizen to travel freely to Cuba”, the Cuban Envoy adds.

He thanks the Government of Liberia and all nations that supported the Cuban resolution against the US blockade presented at the UN last October, which won the support of 191votes, adding that it is a clear sign that almost unanimous rejection of the international community to the blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.

Charge d’ Affaires Vera explains that in 2018, Cubans move through the 60 years of the Revolution and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the beginning of their War of Independence.

Liberia’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Elias Shoniyin says Liberia celebrates with the people of Cuba, noting that Cuba continues to teach the world especially, Liberia, determination.

Minister Shoniyin recalls that Cuba was the first country to find treatment against transmission of HIV AIDs from mother to child, noting that Liberia has several medical Doctors, who have benefitted from studies in Cuba.

“We are grateful for the relationship between Liberia and Cuba, and assure that we will continue to keep the friendship between the two countries. We seek the support of our partners especially, Cuba.” he concludes.
