DEKAP appeals for street children

Destined Kids Assistance Program or DEKAP, a local NGO, has launched an appeal for assistance to enable 48 children of visually impaired street beggars remain in school this academic year.

DEKAP is appealing to the Government of Liberia, corporate institutions, international children organizations and compassionate individuals to buttress its efforts in sponsoring the education less fortunate kids whose parents are considered poorest of the poor in society living by begging at street corners for alms.

In a press release issued in Monrovia, the organization said the initiative is aimed at responding to the appalling situation of children, who are rather joining their parents in street corners to beg for living.

It said the exercise has helped 75 vulnerable Liberian children since 2012. “At present, we’ve enrolled forty eight kids in boarding and community schools. The first semester fees have been paid and we’re struggling to raise the second semester fees, which are due this June.Basically, we are soliciting US$50.00 per child or its equivalent in Liberian dollars. For the past two months, we’ve been engaged in raising support which has not been realized”, DEKAP said thru the release.

It warned that it would be disappointing if the children are put out of school because of continuous non-support.

“Despite the condition of these children’s parents, they deserve to be educated [like] other children. We are optimistic that as we empower them educationally and subsidize their feeding, they would in return help their parents improve their lives and contribute to their community”, the organization pleads.
