” Diabolical lies”

-River Gee Supt. reacts county meet allegations

River Gee County officials spearheading the sporting committee in the just-ended county meet competition, which saw the county win its first trophy, have been entangled in a war of allegations and defense.

Monrovia, Monday, June 3, 2024-River Gee County Superintendent Mike Swengbe has termed the accusations against him, RiverGee County Senators Jonathan Boye Charles Sogbie, and Senator Francis Dopoh regarding the alleged siphoning of funds entrusted to their care during the county meet competition false, misleading, and diabolical.

The men have also been accused of politicizing the victory celebration, which was planned to be held in the county. This prompted the call to account for the entrusted funds.

Superintendent Swengbe was serving as the Sports Steering Committee Chairperson before President Joseph Nyumah Boakai appointed him as Superintendent of the County, which led to his resignation and subsequent replacement by Mr. Barradji McCarthy.

However, responding to the allegations in an interview with Journalists in Monrovia over the weekend, Supt. Swengbe described the allegations as a calculated plan that was politically motivated to ruin their hard-earned reputation, undermine the county’s unity campaign, and derail the team’s effort, which led the county to its first victory.

He added that it was impossible for them to squander funds that belonged to the team when, in fact, they were using their personal funds to fill in gaps whenever there was a shortfall.

He described those making such allegations as elements of distraction that should not be taken seriously due to their selfish political interests.

” I want to make this very clear. The accusation brought against us is misleading and diabolical lies from the distractor. At no point in time we misappropriated money donated or provided to the Sport Steering Committee for our personal use,” he debunked.

The former River Gee County Sports Staring Committee Chairperson said that those spewing such misinformation are those he claimed with political interest who are jealous and yet to understand the strategy, blueprint and philosophy they used to bring the county victory in a heated competition.

Superintendent Swengbe explained that if the major issue is the financial report, they will provide the public with a comprehensive financial report as soon as the activities leading to the celebration of the victory have finally climaxed.

” We couldn’t provide a financial report to the public or the county without the conclusion of the project or activities to commemorate the victory. We have a series of activities, including a Monrovia celebration and a Southeast tour. We are done with that, and so we will provide the report. We believe in transparency and accountability; therefore, there is nothing to hide,” Supt. Swengbe opined.

He adds that funds given to the team were cataloged in two dimensions, particularly those donated by individuals with political interests to the team directly and those donated to the County Sports Staring Committee.

The Rivergee Superintendent asserted that funds that were given to the team directly through its coach and Team Manager would not be accounted for in the report because it was a bonus for the players, indicating that only funds that were directly given to the County Sports Steering Committee that he once chaired will be accounted for.

Commenting on the conflict of interest theory introduced by those he described as detractors, he admitted that RiverGee citizens in the diaspora provided money to him, but it was done on the basis that he is a member of the County Sport Steering Committee and has direct contact with them.

Notwithstanding, he clarified that every cent provided to him was later delivered to the starting committee and was properly spent on the team, which he claimed also contributed to the county’s immediate victory.

Speaking on the politicization of the county meeting, he debunked the allegation and said that they provided open space and invitations to all county citizens and stakeholders.

However, he adds that some individuals decided not to attend due to political interest and began presenting themselves as if they enclosed the celebration process when it was opened. He describes them as disunifiers and political cowards.

However, the River Gee County Superintendent urged citizens to refrain from undermining the county’s progress and unity, stating that disunity has the potential and propensity to hinder development.

” When I took over as Superintendent, I saw huge disunity, and we have been working to address that in consonant with President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s agenda. But there are some citizens of the county who, due to political reasons, don’t want to wake up to the truth and fight for the progress and unity of the county. We are open to working with all citizens, and we hope they embrace this new Liberia,” he concluded.-Edited by Othello B. Garblah
