Do it now

Liberia’s President – elect George Manneh Weah has been challenged to take speedy actions now to improve conditions and government services in poorly served counties here including Grand Gedeh and River Gee, and slum communities such as West Point and New Kru Town in Montserrado County because Liberians expect everything now.

“We are expecting everything now. You know the problem already. Mr. President, Madam Vice President, Representatives, as soon as you take office, start doing the Liberian people job. Expel Mr. Procrastination and Mrs. Delay and employ Mr. and Mrs. Now … and that’s why this sermon is titled What You Ought to Do, Do It Now,” Bishop Emeritus Matthew T. Gueh urged Mr. Weah on Sunday in Monrovia.

During an inaugural thanksgiving and intercessory service graced by outgoing President Ellen Johnson – Sirleaf and her Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai on Sunday, 21 January at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, Bishop Gueh said Mr. Weah and his Vice President – elect Jewel Howard Taylor should start doing the people’s work upon assuming office.

Mr. Weah who hails from Grand Kru County in the southeast has a significant following of youthful voters from West Point, New Kru Town Clara Town, Logan Town and other places in Montserrado, and the December 2017 presidential runoff shows that he won the entire southeast by very high percent above his contender Mr. Boakai.

“West Point cannot wait Mr. President for another rainy season to pass without anything doing there. Something got to be done in West Point and has to be done now,” the Clergy notes. Bishop Gueh says there is a reason that God chose President – elect Mr. Weah, arguing that among all the politicians, he is the one that understands the urgency of the time. But he reminds the incoming president that an emergency must be met with urgency, saying Liberians don’t want delays.

He enjoins Mr. Weah to ensure that if corruption sees “the Country’s Giant” coming, it should go away, and messy education should also go away if it sees the “Country’s Giant” coming, in reference to Mr. Weah’s campaign song in which he is called “The Country’s Giant.”

Bishop Gueh suggests that in order for Mr. Weah’s government’s services to be felt by Liberians, he must get them undergo some a tutorial by Madam Mary Broh, an official of outgoing President Mrs. Sirleaf who is widely hailed by Liberians for her transformative intervention at government agencies upon assignment.

“We do not want another hospital situation under his regime when the ambulance comes with the sirens and disturb us in the place with speed, (just to arrive at their destination hospitals and see) nurses filing their nails,” he adds. The thanksgiving service which is part of activities leading to Mr. Weah’s inauguration on Monday, 22 January was also graced by newly elected officials and outgoing cabinet members of the Sirleaf administration, guests and international partners, among others.
