ECOWAS to assess SDGs execution

The Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS says, it has concluded plans to assess implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Poverty Reduction in West Africa.

A press release from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the ECOWAS Commission Office here says in order to execute the exercise, the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja, Nigeria will send technical delegations to member states in August and September 2018 to collect existing documentations and latest socio-economic data on the Sustainable Development Goals and poverty from 2010 to 2017.

In a communication from the ECOWAS Commission to Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah, the Mission to Liberia is scheduled from 29th to 31st August 2018 and will be led by Mr. Christopher Ajaero, Department for Macro-economic Policies and Economic Research.

According to a Press Release from the ECOWAS National Office in Monrovia, members of the ECOWAS data collection Mission will hold a working session with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning team on Thursday August 30th, 2018 and also interact with other national and international stakeholders involved in monitoring the SDGs and Poverty Reduction in Member States.

The release notes the regional framework for the exercise is not only limited to SDGs and Poverty Reduction, but will also consider other complementary aspects consistent with the strategic axes of the Community Development Programme (CDP), National Development Plans (NDPs) as well as Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS), respectively.

The data collection mission which is part of ECOWAS’ collaborative efforts for the implementation, monitoring and reporting of regional and international initiatives will be jointly coordinated by the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) and the ECOWAS National Coordinating Committee in Liberia.

The release details that prior to their departure on Saturday, 1st September 2018, the delegation together with stakeholders will produce an Aide-Memoire findings which will be presented to the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja and the Government of Liberia, the release says. Press Release
