Elumelu Foundation Contributes US$100K to Ebola Fight
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has received a contribution of US$100,000 from the Tony Elumelu Foundation to be used in the fight against the spread of the deadly Ebola virus disease in Liberia.
The Tony Elumelu Foundation, the owner of the United Bank of Africa Limited (UBA), is an African non-profit organization founded in 2010 by Tony O. Elumelu and headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. The Foundation is engineered to spur the African economy through promoting competitiveness and growth in the private sector and is focused on charting a new course for African philanthropy. It is a pioneer member of the Global Impact Investment Rating System (GIIRS).
According to an Executive Mansion release, the donation was made on Tuesday, August 26, at the Liberian leader’s Foreign Ministry Office by the Chief Risk Officer & Acting Managing Direction/Chief Executive Officer of the UBA-Liberia Limited, Mr. S. Tosha Browne. He was accompanied by the Head of Human Resource at UBA, Mr. Oliver Gipli and the UBA’s Acting Country Treasurer, Madam Famata M. Frank.
Making the presentation, Mr. Browne informed President Sirleaf that Mr. Tony Elumelu is very concern about the current situation in Liberia and has seen the need support the country in its strive to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola virus disease.
He stressed that Mr. Elumelu is hopeful that with the support of all, Liberia and the West African sub–region can overcome the current Ebola outbreak and return the region to normalcy. “It is the prayer of Mr. Elumelu that the Ebola situation in Liberia will be over soon,” Mr. Brown assured.
For her part, President Sirleaf thanked Mr. Elumelu and his Foundation for the donation and expressed gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia. She said the Tony Elumelu Foundation and Mr. Elumelu himself has been a true friend and partner to Liberia reflected in his support to many interventions at several international gatherings around the world.
“The Foundation’s donation to Liberia’s Ebola fight has joined many good friends and partners of the country in pursuing an end to the outbreak,” President Sirleaf told the delegation.

She declared that the amount will be placed in the Government’s Ebola Trust Fund and is committed to ensuring that the fund is disbursed with an accountability process which has already been instituted to ensure transparency in the management of the Trust Fund. She ensured that proper reporting on the funds received will remain an objective of the government during and after the Ebola crisis and expressed the hope that with increased support and all hands on deck, the outbreak will be contained.
