Monrovia, Liberia, February 17, 2025 –  A new initiative aimed at promoting national unity and progress in Liberia through collective efforts of former vice-presidential candidates and their supporters, has been launched.

The establishment of the Former Vice-Presidential Candidates and Defenders for Liberia Common Good (VPCADFLCG) seems to be a step towards building a stronger, more cohesive political landscape here. By focusing on advocacy, this organization could play a significant role in addressing key issues facing the country. Its efforts may help create a more inclusive environment for the country’s growth and development.

The organization aims to leverage the collective influence and experience of former vice-presidential candidates, who participated in the 2023 electoral process to contribute positively to national cohesion and development.

The launch, held at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town on February 15, 2025, gathered distinguished guests, family and well-wishers, and vice-presidential candidates from various political parties in Liberia, such as the Liberian People’s Party (LPP), Democratic People’s Party of Liberia, Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), and Liberians United for Change, among others.

Dr. James Kollie Barclay, Jr., co-chair of VPCADFLCG, delivering a message on behalf of Chairman Dr. Max O. Vargbele, provided important context about the organization’s formation. It was established just over a year ago following the 2023 presidential and general elections when candidates from different political backgrounds came together.

“VPCADFLCG is a law-abiding organization, focused on the common good of all Liberians and operates in good faith”, Dr. Barclay notes.

His emphasis on the organization’s commitment to addressing societal ills indicates that the VPCADFLCG plans to take a proactive role in confronting issues like corruption, inequality, and other challenges facing Liberia. This could mean they are focused not only on fostering peace and unity but also on advocating for real societal reforms that benefit all citizens.

Highlighting other initiatives, he explains that VPCADFLCG has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with one of the best educational institutions in India. This could be a game-changer for deserving Liberian students. Scholarships for international education would not only help students but could also contribute to Liberia’s development by bringing back knowledge and skills that could benefit various sectors of the country.

Dr. Barclay speaks of intent to convert waste to energy, which is another exciting development. This aligns with both environmental sustainability and addressing energy challenges in Liberia. This could also create jobs, improve waste management, and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.

“We look forward to working with closely and harmoniously with the Government of Liberia and partners to achieve our goals”, he adds.

Guest Speaker, Cllr. Taiwan Saye Gongloe, underscores the importance of unity and collaboration, especially after a highly-contested election. His expression of gratitude to the former vice-presidential candidates for remaining united after the 2023 presidential and general elections highlights a significant move toward peacebuilding and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.

Cllr. Gongloe’s speech on “A Call for Transformative Change: Liberia’s Path to Prosperity” clearly reflects the urgency for meaningful progress in the country. By emphasizing bold action, systemic reform, and people-centered leadership, he’s calling for a shift away from traditional approaches that may have failed to address Liberia’s deep-rooted challenges.

His focus on responsible leadership is particularly important, as it underscores the need for leaders who prioritize the well-being of the people rather than political or personal gain. Systemic reforms could mean tackling issues like corruption, governance inefficiencies, and social inequality, all of which are crucial for long-term prosperity.

Cllr. Gongloe’s passionate plea for unity is a powerful call to action, emphasizing the importance of collective effort in driving transformative change.

“I am urging Liberians, former presidential and vice-presidential candidates, community leaders, and every citizen to join in;” he says, recognizing that true change requires the involvement of all sectors of society, not just politicians. Editing by Jonathan Browne
