Foundation for International Dignity (FIND) Executive Director Aaron Juakollie has condemned recent mayor election conducted in Gbercon, Tokpablee District as illegal.
According to Juakollie, the process was unconstitutional and in gross violation of the recently passed Local Government Act of 2018.
It can be recalled that the Tokpablee District Coordinator of the Friends of Tokpah, Goyomo Sirleaf, on Monday 20, January announced his victory in the purported city mayor election that was made possible by the support of Liberia’s Deputy Speaker Prince Moye and Senator Henrique Flomo Tokpah.
Juakollie wonders why will Goyomo brag about winning an illegal process, as he cites Section 1.16(j) of the Local Government Acts of 2018 which states that: “City Mayors and Commissioners of townships and boroughs shall be appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia with consent of the honorable Liberian Senate.”He says the process needs to be nullified to serve as precedent for other towns and villages across that county to avoid repeating such error.
Juakollie however admonishes residents of the county to petition their lawmakers to make necessary recommendation to President George Manneh Weah to appoint some of their brightest citizens, instead of engaging in such illegal processBy Joseph Titus Yekeryan in Bong—Edited by Winston W. Parley
