Gbarnga Prison Over-crowded

The Chief Superintendent of the Gbarnga central prison has described the over-crowdedness of the prison as a serious challenge to its smooth operations.

Mr. Feshall Abraham Dean told our our Bong County correspondent recently that the prison has the capacity to cater to a hundred and thirty persons, but at present, it hosts more than its capacity – something, he said, was posing serious challenge to the management of the prison.

According to Mr. Dean, the over-crowdedness of the Gbarnga Central Prison is chiefly based on the abandonment of cases by complainants, urging complainants not to abandon defendants after being put in prison only because they want such people to be behind bars.

Mr. Dean used the occasion to call on the Ministry of Justice to speedily ensure that pre-trial detainees currently at the prison are tried to reduce congestion.
