GoL holds emergency national security meeting

The Government of Liberia is expected to convene an emergency national security meeting today in the wake of the alleged mysterious disappearance of containers and bags of moneys from the Freeport of Monrovia, totaling 16 Billion Liberian Dollars.

The Head of Secretariat of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives or LEITI, J. Gabriel Nyenkan, who made the disclosure here Tuesday, 18 September while on a live radio talk show, calls for the arrest and detention of individuals, including police officers already linked to taking delivery of the batch of moneys from the Freeport.

Nyenkan believes state security forces, including the Police are proceeding slowly on the matter when suspects have already been identified. He cites the former executive governor of the Central Bank of Liberia J. Milton Weeks and the board of governors of the Bank, including the former Acting Managing Director of the National Port Authority Celia Cuffy Brown and the newly appointed Managing Director Dave Conmey as people that should be immediately investigated.

“If I were the Director of Police, people should have been in jailed by now”, he emphasizes.Speaking with OK Fm yesterday, Mr. Nyenkan describes the syndicate as treasonable, requiring government’s urgent attention.
However, the Communication Director at the National Port Authority Malcom Scott clarifies that the NPA does not exercise direct handling of cargoes entering the Port.

He says instead, it is APM Terminals, a private firm hired by the Government of Liberia at the NPA that has since 2000 been handling cargoes inside the Port, including B-VAC and Customs. “Our security are deployed to maintain containers; we are regulators”, Malcom responded via mobile phone on the talk show.

Police Spokesman Moses Carter says every person of interest on the disappearance of the moneys from the Port will be investigated, adding that the ongoing investigation is holistic.Meanwhile Grand Bassa County District#5 Representative Thomas Goshua says the House is convening an emergency session today on the matter with key institutions, including the Liberia Revenue Authority, the National Port Authority, and Customs to be summoned.
