GoL, partners to hold int’l retreat

The government of Liberia in partnership with the International Research Forum from London will this weekend host an international conference on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Secretariat of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs has announced. The conference under the theme “Achieving the SDGs’ vision of equity, growth and resilience in Africa through regional cooperation;” A regional retreat for government planning officials and non-governmental partners is expected to kick off on September 15 and ends on the 17.


According to a release from the Secretariat, the two-day retreat will bring together government officials from several ministries, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Participants hail from various African countries and institutions including Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Tunisia, Rwanda, South Africa, the Pan African Parliament, ECOWAS, the Africa Center on the SDGs in Kigali among others.

The Monrovia Retreat will allow participants to share ideas on their domestication processes of the new global development agenda adopted by all member states of the UN in 2016. Her Excellency president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who played a key role in the crafting of the SDGs also known as Agenda 2030, as Co-Chair of the UN High Level Panel on the Post-2015 as well as Chair of the AU high Level Committee of Heads of State on the Post-2015 welcomed the retreat as an important event, which will broaden Liberia’s knowledge about what other countries and institutions on the continent are doing to adapt the SDGs to their development agenda.

President Sirleaf added that another important aspect of the regional retreat is the partnership between stakeholders from various background. “Development is not a job for governments alone, it requires the involvement of all segments and sectors of society, including the CSOs, the Media, Academia and the Private Sector. Government lays out policies but implementation is everyone’s business,” the Liberian leader said.

The release noted that the Monrovia Retreat is the second of such conferences, as the first one was held in Bogota, Colombia a year ago. It is one of the activities of the SDGs Support Group initiated by Sweden and comprising 9 other countries around the world, including Liberia. The Retreat is fully financed by Norway and OSIWA.

Meanwhile, government ministries and agencies participating include the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency, Liberia Institute Statistics and Geo-Information Services, the Ministries of Gender, Health, Agriculture, Youth and Sports, among others.-Press release
