Nelson C. Oneyama Golf Youth Training Tournament commenced last Friday simultaneously at the Sea view and Firestone Golf Courts in Virginia and Harbel. Dr. Oneyama is the President of the Liberia Golf Association.
The Training Tournament is in fulfillment of his inaugural speech in which he promised to make Golf a Champion Sport in Liberia. He also promised to recruiting and train young people who have the passion for the game.
The Tournament, which is expected to last for more than three months, has at least forty-eight Youths between the ages of 14 and 17 and 18 and 24.
Taking the kickoff on behalf of the President of the Liberia Golf Association, the Secretary General Jacob Smith, urged the participants to take advantage of the Competition, as it is intended to make them Liberia’s next Golf Champions.
According to him, the competition is intended to scout possible replacement for the current professionals after they shall have left the scene.
He said the Competition has been organized by the Liberia Golf Association with sponsorship from its President Dr. Nelson C. Oneyama, for the purpose of producing a new breed of professional Golfers to represent Liberia at International Competitions.
Smith further explained that it was the wish of the Liberia Golf Association to see two Youths emerged as Winners of the Tournament. He said the winners will be sent to Nigeria and South Africa to acquire further knowledge as professional Golfers.
Smith did not, however, mention the cost of the Competition, but disclosed that Dr. Oneyama has made available the amount of sixty thousand Liberian Dollars ($60,000.00) as his sponsorship commitment.
It is expected to be played in two phases, with the first phase lasting for six weeks, while the second is expected to last for eight weeks. Participants : Abou Boakai, Jikens Dennis, Elijah Sharp and Tommy Payne. Others are Solomon Nimley, Jacob Browne, Dennis Quiqui and Ben Harrison.
