Govt. hails citizens’ resilience against Ebola

The Government of Liberia has applauded citizens across the country for the bold steps taken in containing the deadly Ebola virus here. The government says it recognizes the effort made by community leaders in keeping up to the task by following Ebola protocol instituted by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Information Minister Lewis Brown has attributed the success in the fight against the killer disease first to the resilience of the Liberian people, who took ownership of the fight at the community level and national efforts supported by international intervention led by the United States of America.

He praised the international partners that help Liberia during the heat of the Ebola crisis, saying, “Your role was also very crucial, providing the much needed support that enabled our people in the towns, villages and communities, who were the victims, to take ownership of the fight. The U.S. has been a great partner.”

Addressing a regular press briefing Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism on Capitol Hill, Minister Brown said the fact that Liberia is reporting zero case in 21 days, means that tremendous efforts have been made, and the country is on the way to being declared Ebola freed.

The MICAT boss also said the challenge now, having turned the corner against Ebola, was to see how the U.S. Government and other internationals partners could continue to remain engaged not just in helping to eradicate the disease, but also to play a lead role in the Liberian Government’s efforts to get back on track with its national development plan – the Agenda for Transformation in the post-Ebola era.

He said the government’s road to health programme, which include upgrading the health sector to withstand future disease outbreaks, improving the agriculture sector with a focus on storing, preserving and processing, as well as support to the provision of basic social services were all vital areas such funding could be directed.

Mr. Brown stressed that every citizen should commit to working with the Government to firstly, ensure that Liberia maintains the zero case benchmark and to also remain engaged with Liberia so that the country not only gets back on track with its national development programme upset by Ebola, but also explore new areas of cooperation, saying, it takes proper leadership to contain the deadly Ebola virus and it will take the same leadership to declare this country Ebola free.

He frowned on critics of the government, who say the administration has done very little, saying no patriotic citizens will watch their country suffer without doing anything to buttress government’s effort.

“You cannot wait to get in power before doing any good for your country. Ebola has paved the way for every citizen in this country to join hands and work together for the betterment of the future”, Brown ended.
