Govt receives supplies for orphanages

The Liberian Government has received a forty-foot container loaded with over thousand pieces of tables, desks, cupboards, copy books and other education materials for orphanages and public schools here.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf’s Spiritual Advisor Rev. Jervis Witherspoon and Deputy Gender Minister for Children and Social Protection Madam Lydia mai-Sherman and other officials received the consignment in the Compound of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital on Monday, 14 September.

The recipients of the container said the items were donated by the son of President Sirleaf, Doctor Adama Sirleaf and a lady in Georgia, the United States of America – Madam Jennifer Vinston. Making remarks on behalf of President Sirleaf, Rev. Witherspoon extended thanks and appreciation to the donors and expressed confidence that the donated items will serve the purpose for which they have been sent.

He said the donation to the Liberian children tells of the good-will that the Sirleaf led-government has and continues to enjoy when it comes to people who have love for the country. Also speaking, Deputy Gender Minister for Children and Social Protection Madam Sherman said distribution of the items “hopefully” on Tuesday September 15, to at least seven orphanages and six public schools.

Madam Sherman said she was told that the supplies received worth over US$40,000, while emphasizing that the items will be distributed to accredited orphanages that have schools within their institutions. Few of the orphanages listed as possible beneficiaries are: My Brother’s Keeper, Rock of Divine, including the Margibi County Vai Town Community School, as well as other orphanages in Monrovia and Brewerville.

She described the donation as very important for orphanages because there are lots of things in the container that she says are very useful to the children.
