HIV/AIDS Awareness Goes To Buchanan

In preparation for this year’s observance of World AIDS Day here, the United Youth for Peace, Education, Transparency and Development in Liberia has lunched series of training workshops for girls in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

The training is mainly focusing on adolescent girls to broaden their minds on the danger of HIV/AIDS in any society.  The exercise is also highlighting preventive strategies, including the use of female condoms, bringing together over 25 girls from across the county with funding from the African Women Development Fund.

The head of the group Timothy Kpeh, said at the close of the training, the participants are expected to serve as HIV/AIDS ambassadors in their respective communities and schools.

He said the training is necessary because girls are normally sexually harassed by men in their various areas, adding that there are several nationalities residing in Grand Bassa County because of the presence of concession companies there.

Mr. Kpeh noted that Liberian youths should understand the effect of the deadly disease that does not have cure, adding African countries must support the fight against HIV/AIDS through effective education.

“Principally, we provide training that aim to correct common misconceptions about HIV/AIDS and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health” he said.

The youth group will on 1 December this year organize the celebration of World AIDS Day in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.
