House reconstitutes committee

After the exit of indicted Speaker Tyler, the House of Representatives headed by Deputy Speaker Hans M. Barchue has reconstituted various standing committees, affecting Ways, Means and Finance; Judiciary, Public Accounts, and State Enterprise, among others.

Most of those heading committees are loyalists of Deputy Speaker and Presiding Officer Barchue. Making the appointment Thursday, 15 September in regular session, Presiding Officer and Deputy Speaker Barchue said the appointments were balance and void of self-interest.

Article 38 of the Constitution of Liberia empowers both the Senate and the House of Representatives to create various working committees and sub-committees, but with a caveat that the Committee on Ways, Means, Finance and Budget must consist of one representative from each of the 15 counties of Liberia.

Article 38 reads, “Each House shall adopt its own rules of procedure, enforce order, and with the concurrence of two-thirds of the entire membership, may expel a member for cause. Each House shall establish its own committees and sub-committees provided, however, that the committee on revenues and appropriation shall consist of one member from each County. All rules adopted by the Legislature shall conform to the requirements of due process of law laid down in the Constitution.”

Those appointed include Bong County District# 2 Representative Prince Moye, Chairman on Ways, Means and Finance and co-chair by Nimba County District One Representative Jeremiah K. Koung.

Others are Nimba County District #7 Representative WorleaSaywahDunah, Chairman on Judiciary; Rep. Bill Twehway of Montserrado County district #3, Co-chair on Rules, Order and Administration; Rep. Thomas P. Fallah of Montserrado County District #5, Chairman on Public Account, co-chaired by Rep. Edward K. Karfia; and Rep. Garrison Yealue of Nimba County district #4, Chairman on State Enterprises, respectively.

Meanwhile, Presiding Officer Barchue has disclosed that the appointment of committee heads continues next week Tuesday.
