The business world is a very exciting world and has endless opportunities for the individual who enters with a desire and determination to succeed. In time past the general view was that business operation was only for people with higher education and that there must be an office or some kind of visible establishment. But today anyone can start a business and business transaction can take place anywhere. Friend, you do not need to have a higher education, an office or a traditionally visible establishment. Once you are able to provide products or a service in exchange for a fee that is a business. No matter where such transaction takes place.
Friend, there are so many areas in which you can operate a business. But there are a few rules that will have to be observed if you want to stand out from others and wish to be successful. Also, your idea and approach to business will have to be changed from the norm.
Let me give you a story. A lady once came to me about a year ago and said to me, Brother Brown; I want you to give me some business advice. I later asked her about what it is she wanted to do. “I want to get involved in business. I want to start my own hair beauty salon but am currently working together with some friends in the Red-light area.” She replied.
That is a good idea. But then I asked her, do you have the beginning capital and have you found out the cost? She said she does not have the capital but that starting such a business would cost her not less than US$700.
Well, I said to her tell me how you people are going about your operation at your work site? In response, she said we are a group of three women. But there are other women’s groups. Some has three women within a group, some four and the bigger group has about five women, the lady said. We have only one area where we make the hot water for the customers’ hair, one big towel to wipe the customers’ hair and a lapper that we used to wrap around them when we are washing or trimming the customers’ hair.
Alright, that’s great, I said to her. But what do you do when each group has a customer or let’s say your group has a customer and two other women’s groups has a customer each and all of you are ready to wash or trim the hair of your individual customers in the wake of your limited service provision-one fire place, one pot for making hot water and one big towel? The group that will be first to engaged the use of the items will begin work with their customer while the others wait. She said. But then I said to her, if you want to become successful and to stand out you will have to do things different from others. You will have to be creative and learn to use your imagination.
First, since you are the main person that is responsible to catch/bring in customers from the main road to your group’s business locality or site, you must get to know them. Begin to show them that you care about them. In term of an offense committed against the customer by a person(s) within your group, which according to the lady is common among the women’s groups within their separate business sites/locality, you must be an encourager. Give your customers support. Speak kind words to customers and give them a call, especially when you have broker peace during a conflict or commotion.
Second, you will have to start on your own. Go to the market and pay for a kettle, a big tower from the store or from the imported used clothes or the DK as we called it here in Liberia. Purchase a chair and if possible purchase two or three. Sometime your customers may come with friends. You will need to have a seat for them because it is during this time many women enjoy their conversation. Also you will need to purchase two lappers including tools-combs, a scissor and two mirrors because I have observed many women love to look at not only the front of their hair but the back also.
Third, speak kind words to your customers and make each of them to feel like a princess. Understand that the customer is always a king. After you are through with making their hair, exchange numbers with them and give them a call-showing your concern and letting them know that you are glad for their safe arrival back home and that you appreciate their patronage and ask them to come again. The strategy here is to build a client base.
After three months, this lady called to let me know that she has had a breakthrough and today as I write this article she has over two hundred and sixty customers and still counting, and has started three other hair beauty salons. Those customers have become her regular customers.
Friend, it is only those who think on a grand scale that live for tomorrow. They are the ones that stand out from others and excel in business because they think creatively and productively, expecting wonderful things the next day. As they speed toward a bright and great future, they know that one day the future will become the present. Those who only cling to the past and the present but don’t look to the future will never amount to much.
To excel above others in business you will need to have a quite unique view and mentality. Friend, it is your thinking pattern that will determine your future and it is only those who have the right attitude and mentality will succeed both in life and in business, but those who do not will fail.
Dear reader, in order to stand out from others, you must have a dream for it is the quickest way to accomplish a goal. You must not blame others. You must first succeed in the place where you are now. When a person accomplishes remarkable success in his or her present place, he or she will naturally be moved to a higher place.
A beginner businessman once asked me to teach him the secret of a successful business. I advised him, “You must start from where you are, and succeed at what you are doing now.”
Rather than looking at the present, we ought to look toward a better future and think, “How can I become more effective? How can I improve in my business?” You must continue to hope and dream of great things for the business or organization under your care.
Business is all about your mind and attitude. You cannot succeed in business when on the other hand you decide that you keep your job and pay someone to run your business for you. You will be providing job for that person and stress for yourself. If you are not prepared to give yourself to business then don’t bother with it. Why start a business that will not be able to pay you first, pay for itself, and provide for your future?
Use your imagination and creativity and you will find out that there is enough business right here in Liberia. Look at the Lebanese and the Fullahs right here in Liberia. How many are in to business? What’s their main profession here in Liberia?
Your mind is the place where you can build any type of business that you desire. Use your mind and put it to work for you constantly. Observe and analyze everything that you see and use it to your best advantage. Stay away from traditional thinking. Focus on filling a need for someone and he will pay for it. Such person will tell somebody else about what you did for them and it will continue from there.
Your application of these principles to your business will help you witness visible changes and your business will grow day by day.
