Imams reminded to adhere to Ebola preventive measures

A team of United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) under the UNDP Montserrado Community Based Initiative (MCBI) project has reminded Muslim clerics in the Clara Town Community in District 16 in Montserrado County, to continue teaching their congregation about Ebola preventive measures despite the decline in new cases.

UNV Field Associate Varlee Sanor said despite the considerable drop in cases of the Ebola virus disease in Liberia, the Imams should avoid complacency and keep the various measures in place at their homes and places of worship.

“Ebola is not gone yet. Until the World Health Organization (WHO) can declare Liberia Ebola free, we should not relax those rules that have been outlined to us by the Ministry of Health and partners…” Sanor said at the official launch of a nation-wide Da’wah (invitation/recruitment) and Imam training program held recently at the Marvii Sonii School in Clara Town.

The program, under the auspices of the National Imam Council of Liberia (NICOL), seeks to sensitize the Muslim population on the need to remain vigilant in ensuring that their congregations around the Country strictly observe the preventive measures put in place by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organizations (WHO) regarding the eradication of the Ebola virus disease from the Country.

The Initiative comes against the background that despite a reduction in new Ebola cases, there were reports from Active Case Finders and Contact Tracers in the field that religious groupings were still involved in laying hands on the sick and performing traditional rituals on dead bodies.

Out of the 15 Counties in Liberia, Montserrado and Grand Cape Mount Counties still remain a huge challenge in the eradication of the virus.

The UNV MCBI Field Associate said his team was ready and willing to work with the Imam Council and the entire Muslim community to ensure that the virus is totally eradicated from the country.

He told Muslim clerics not to hesitate in reporting any suspected case of Ebola in their communities to the National Ebola Taskforce. He encouraged them to also avoid any form of contacts with sick or dead people.
During the program, flyers containing various Ebola preventive messages translated in both English and Arabic were distributed.
