Indian Community donates food items to Central Prison

The Indian Community in Liberia has presented food items to the Monrovia Central Prison (MCP) compound situated on Center Street in Monrovia. The items donated to the MCP include 200 bags of 50kg rice and vegetable cooking oil.

Presenting the items to the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) Thursday, 11 June, the Indian Consulate General to Liberia Mr. Shri Upjit Singh Sachdeva (Jeety) said the items were the Indian Community’s own way of identifying with inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison compound during the coronavirus crisis here.

He expresses hope that the items would assist the authorities at the prison compound to cater to the food needs of inmates who are under detention.

Receiving the donation from the Indian Community, a representative from the Ministry of Justice expresses gratitude to the Indian Community in Liberia for the humanitarian gesture extended to the inmates. The Justice Ministry official however calls for the protection of inmates at the prison compound by every Liberian to ensure that they are provided due process in keeping with the constitutional provision.

The official notes that the donation will go a long way in addressing some of the challenges being faced by the Ministry of Justice including food for the inmates, assuring the ministry’s preparedness to wisely use the items provided for the upkeep of inmates.
