Islamic Group To Construct Hospital, University

An Islamic group in Liberia under the banner, “Munazama” has frowned on the practice of opposite sex Doctors treating opposite sex patients in hospitals, stressing that such practice was totally against the Islamic faith.

Munazama Country Representative, Abraham C. Sarpee, told reporters that because of the continuous habit, the organization has deemed it necessary to construct a hospital that will allow only female doctors to take care of female patients.

Sarpee made the statement on Thursday, October 17 at the Munazama headquarters in Caldwell, when the organization shared gifts with staff and employees of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in celebration of “Abraham Day.”

“For us, it is not a good thing for a male director to treat a female patient. It is against our religion. They are human beings and anything can happen, when my wife goes to the hospital and needs an ejection, you will find male doctors treating her, that is while Munazama has thought it wise to build an Islamic hospital where female doctors will only take care of female patients,” he disclosed.

He pointed out that the newly established non-governmental and nonprofit organization, which was founded by the President of Sudan Bashal and supported by United States of America and Qatar has been in existence for two years, operating in 27 countries.

Sarpee, who just transferred from Sierra Leone where he served as Country Representative, said the organization was established to teach people how to fish for themselves rather than providing them fish, like a famous Chinese proverb says, adding that the organization is not only for people with Islamic background but all mankind.

He further disclosed that the organization has already purchased two acres of land to build the first Islamic University in Liberia, and there 150 students on scholarships in Sierra Lone pursing Master’s and PhD programs.
