Japan Donates Over 600,000 Bags of Rice to Liberia

Release reaching this paper says the Japanese Government has donated a consignment of 19,101 metric tons of rice or 636,700 bags of rice to the Government of Liberia. But the Ministry of Commerce and Industry here says the rice is expected to arrive in Liberia on December 17, 2011.

The ministry’s Public Information Director Mambu Golafale, says the Government of Liberia is expected to generate over US$7 million from the sale of the rice. The consignment is expected to be sold at a retail price of US$15.00 per 30 Kilograms, Golafale said.

A release from the Commerce Ministry says the Inspectorate Division has been instructed to ensure full compliance with the government’s stipulated ceiling price.mThe release said proceeds from the sale of will be put in a special account at the Central Bank to purposely support development projects in Liberia.

Meanwhile, the government has announced that sale of the rice will focus on leeward counties to stabilize prices in those areas.
