Judge Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court in Sanniquellie, Nimba County has ordered the imprisonment of a public defender in the County and fined him US$100 for disrespecting the court.
Public Defender Robertson P. Mahn had gone to court to defend a suspect when the judge posed a question to him, but did not respond. Instead, he posed his own question to Judge Gbeisay.
Public Defender Mahn became enraged in court when Judge Gbeisay struck his gavel, imposing a fine and ordering his imprisonment.
When contacted, Mahn refused to comment on the matter, but told this paper to go to Judge Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr.
Judge Gbeisay has recently threatened to deal with court workers reporting for work late or conspicuously absent in court without an excuse.
He made the threat during the opening of the August Term of Court recently in Sanniquellie, Nimba County.
At that ceremony, he also admonished magistrates not to jail paramount and town chiefs in the county.
According to the judge, there has been continuous arrest and detention of local authorities by magistrates, noting that those local authorities are helping the court to reduce cases by settling disputes out of court.
