Judiciary honors UN officials

Liberia’s Judicial Branch has honored two senior UN officials here for their services within the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL’s) which the judges said went the extra mile during a successful mission.

Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) Mr. Farid Zarif and his deputy Mr. Waldemar Vrey were gowned at the Banquet Hall of the Supreme Court at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia Tuesday, 27 March.

At the honoring and farewell ceremony for the UN officials, Liberia’s Chief Justice Mr. Francis S. Korkpor, Sr. called the honorees friends of the Judiciary, remembering the role they played in averting the impeachment of some justices of the Supreme Court by lawmakers over some disagreement last year.

“We remember the role they played when members of this bench were under the threats of impeachment. They, along with others successfully intervened to avert what would have amounted to a constitutional crisis,” Mr. Korkpor says.

Besides, Justice Korkpor notes that UNMIL’s performance went the extra mile, recalling that through its supports, “many of our institutions” that were destroyed during the war have been reconstructed or repaired while under the watch of UNMIL two successive presidential and general elections were conducted in 2005 and 2011.

He also recalls Mr. Zarif and Mr. Vrey’s concerns that were shown and expressed whenever there appeared to be constraints and hitches during the 2017 presidential and representatives’ elections.

He says under the watch of UNMIL, a smooth transition of power was held this year following the 2017 presidential and representatives’ elections.

Justice Korpor thanked the UN envoys for the work they have done so well in Liberia, assuring that as they leave, the assistance they provided the judiciary will go a long way in ensuring that the rule of law is sustained.

Responding on behalf of the honorees, SRSG Mr. Farid Zarif thanked the Judiciary for the honor, saying what a honor to be told that you did your job very well.

He says they watched the actions of the Justices, applaud and admire their actions in the face of all they encounter during the electoral period including time limitation and others to deliver. He asked the Justices to accept his deepest respect on behalf of his colleagues Mr. Waldemar Vrey.
