Kailondo demands $5m

Businessman Atty. George Kailondo says he will be willing to negotiate with government [on demolition of his project] once he can be given the five million dollars that he spent on the project. He told reporters Friday, 12 October in Congo Town that he has spent more than five million on his project in Congo Town that is said to be in the right of way of an overpass earmarked by government.
Atty. Kailondo however denies allegations made by Deputy Information Minister Eugene Fahgon that he has defied the Government of Liberia.

During the Ministry’s regular press conference on Thursday, 11 October, Deputy Minister Fahngon told journalists that the government of Liberia has provided Kalando sufficient time to remove a structure that he erected in Congo Town, but the businessman has refused to do so.Reacting to Mr. Fahngon’s claim, Atty. Kailondo says at no time did he refuse to remove his structure.

However, Kailondo says there are processes in doing that, adding: “I can’t go against the government.” According to him, he started this project since 2016 and it was completed in September 2018.He says on 13 September, he was home when he received a call that people from Public Works had ordered that works on his project be stopped.

Kailondo says when he made inquiry with the Public Works as to why he should stop the project, he was told that his building was in the right of way.According to him, the folks from Public Works informed him that they wanted to do an overpass to the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town beginning in July.

Kailondo says he demanded that Public Works Minister Mobutu Nyenpan communicate this through writing, but he is yet to be written.Further, Kailondo says he demands to see the blueprint, but he was again told that they were awaiting people from China to come with the blueprint.

Responding to Fahngon’s claim, Kailondo urges the Deputy Minister to get information before making statement. The businessman notes that he is a law abiding citizen and is willing to do anything, once it is for the development of the country. Kailondo says the building will be named after him and President George Manneh Weah, and it will be called “St. George’s Plaza.”
