Normal vehicular and human movements were stalled when the middle section of the Konola Bridge, a major bridge linking the Kakata-Gbarnga highways got damaged severely Wednesday, October 27.
Several trucks, and other vehicles belonging to private, commercial and NGOs were seen in queue on both sides of the road probably praying for a way out.
Some trucks belonging to the UNMIL Chinese Contingent were seen in the middle of the bridge, while officers believed to be members of the Chinese Mechanical and Engineering Unit performed what could be termed as short term solutions.
In a chat with distressed drivers, commuters as well some of those trekking blamed the situation on the lack of proper attention at the bridge; others said instead of finding a genuine long term solution, there have always been “temporary touches” on the bridge.
They blamed Buchanan Renewable Energy for worsening the problem, with the current transportation of rubber logs from Salala Rubber Plantation in Margibi County.
Meanwhile, the Resident Public Works Engineer for Margibi County, Sylvester Zokers, has confirmed that the ministry was informed about the situation on the Konola Bridge and was working out modalities to remedy the problem as soon as possible.
This brings to four the amount of times that the Konola Bridge has been affected this year alone.
