Labor, LRA, LIS begin joint inspection Monday

The Ministry of Labor along with the Liberia Revenue Authority or LRA, and the Liberia Immigration Service or LIS begins a nation-wide inspection on Monday, 2 April to pave the way for the generation of much needed revenue for Government and ensure full compliance of the Decent Work Act of 2015.

Addressing a regular press briefing here Thursday, 29 March at the Information Ministry on Capitol Hill, the Minister of Labor, Moses Y. Kollie says the inspection is intended to remind employers and employees about their responsibilities in keeping with the Decent Work Act of 2015.

He says during the exercise, the Ministry will make available copies of the Act to various work places. “We have had discussion with the International Labor Organization in funding the printing and popularization of said Act into simple Liberian English for the benefit of all employees and employers throughout the country.” He noted.

Minister Kollie discloses that within two months, his ministry has received and handled a number of written complaints in line with the Decent Work Act of 2015, saying that they have been able to handle and rule in most of the reported cases, including the case APM Terminals Management Vs. Workers, and are currently investigating the case involving the Management of Sethi Brothers and Duraplast against their workers.

He stresses that as part of the Ministry’s effort in keeping with the Decent Work Act, government has denied up to 12 work permit requests, which were all intended to provide jobs for non-Liberians in the formal employment sector in which he notes, more Liberians are qualified and prepared to work.

He says the Ministry of Labor intends to partner with the International Labor Organization or ILO in hosting a national dialogue on the ILO initiated Decent Work Country Program.

“We have begun making sure that the National Tripartite Council is established which will lead also to the formation of the Minimum Wage Board by President George Weah. This Board will from time to time advise the Minister of Labor, review and recommend wages that will promote the decent work in Liberia.” Kollie adds.
