LAF Boycotts Marathon

The Liberia Athletics Federation has announced a boycott of this year’s marathon to be organized by the Liberia Marathon Trust. The LAF said it reached the decision due to failure of the Liberia Marathon Trust to follow prescribed procedures and conclude a memorandum of understanding with the national athletics.

It said the MOU provides a clear roadmap on how both the LAF and the LMT could proceed in organizing and effectively implementing the Monrovia marathon. The marathon lunched this year’s athletics program over the weekend.

The President of the Liberia Athletics Federation Frederick B. Krah, said the federation is the only recognized entity that is charged with the responsibility to coordinate and organize all athletics events in the country.

He said the LAF’s decision has been communicated to the Liberia National Olympic Committee, and a formal complaint was underway to the IAAF. The LAF has ordered all technicians, officials and its members not to transact any business with the LMT, pending conclusion of a formal MOU.

Mr. Krah disclosed that this year’s world athletics day celebration will be held in Margibi County characterized by a two-day youth athletics program. Besides, he said a national high school competition is slated for the first week in June.
