Liberia to observe International Women’s Day

The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection (MGCSP) will Tuesday, March 8, 2016 join the rest of the world in observance of the International Women’s Day (IWD)

Every year the day is being commemorated globally as part of efforts to recognize women for their social, political and economic achievements. The day also celebrates the courage and determination of ordinary women who have played extraordinary roles in the history of their countries, communities and society at large.

The 2016 IWD celebration is being observed under a Global theme “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality,” while Liberia will memorialize March 8 under a national theme: “Pledge for Parity by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.”

This year’s commemoration will highlight the importance of Gender Parity in national development agenda focusing on initiatives to include Inter-generational Dialogue, Debate, Traditional Exhibition, Women car wash and the Launch of the Dollar Campaign.

The highlighted programs are arranged with specific objective to increase awareness on the significance of International Women’s Day; enlighten university students (young females and males) on the significance of achieving gender parity for national development and its link to the SDGs, African Women Decade, AU; and recognize the achievements of 20-women who have made positive contributions in their communities and society at large and also to create an avenue of support for women’s political participation and empowerment.

Targeted beneficiaries of this year’s International Women’s Day celebration are women, men, university students, girls, women in governance, women entrepreneur, academia, youth groups, traditional and rural women, persons living with disabilities and HIVs, GBV survivors, amongst others.

Meanwhile, the official celebration of the 2016 International Women’s Day will be in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County (Fair Ground) beginning with a parade at 9am, while programs marking the observance of the 2016 IWD will be held simultaneously in the fourteen counties.-Press release
