Liberian Coast Guard to train 40 Immigration Personnel

The Liberian Coast Guard (LCG) has accepted a request to train forty Immigration Border Patrol Marine Unit Officers from the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS).


A press release from the Ministry of National Defense (MoD) dated 4 April says LCG will train the LIS personnel in the operation of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB), beginning from 1 May to 19 May 2018 at the Liberian Coast Guard Base.

The release indicates that the agreement for the training came about through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the LIS and the Ministry of National Defense / Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) made and entered into on Wednesday, 4 April.

LIS Commissioner-General Cllr. Lemuel E. A. Reeves, Sr., represented the LIS while Mr. Tibli O. Dickson, Sr., represented the Defense Ministry / Armed Forces of Liberia.

It can be recalled that the LIS received a donation of six Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats to build its operational capacity. The LIS, being desirous of training its designated personnel for the use of these boats, requested the Liberia Coast Guard to assist in conducting the training.

According to the MoU, the LCG will offer the forty designated LIS officers two courses which include Small Boat Operations and Outboard Motor Maintenance for the period of 18 days.

The LCG will also provide protective equipment, instructors, classroom, training labs, training materials and PPE, transport and storage of fuel for the Outboard Motors and lodging for the forty course attendees at no cost.

In consideration of the services that the LCG will provide, the LIS shall pay the amount of US$32,500.00 dollars through the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to the LCG/MoD for the implementation of the training prior to the commencement of the training on 1 May.

During the signing ceremony, Deputy Defense Minister for Administration T. Olandrus Dixon assured LIS Commissioner General Cllr. Lemuel E. A. Reeves, Sr., that the training will be conducted with accepted international safety norms.

For his Part, Cllr. Reeves said that the training will afford the LIS officers the knowledge to perform the mandate of the LIS which includes the control of immigration, emigration and patrol of the Liberian borders to interdict illegal entry, human trafficking and the entry of illegal arms and weapon of mass destruction.–Press release
