Liberian delegation departs for World Cross Country Championships

A four-man delegation departed the country today March 24 to participate in the world cross country championship in Kampala, Uganda on Sunday March 26, 2017.


The delegation includes two (2) teenage Liberian athletes, Lucy Massaquoi, 18 and Andrew S. Kpehe 17, Coach Samuel Cooper and the PRO Leroy M. Sonpon. The Liberian athletes are expected to join over 800 athletes to run in the historic and prestigious Kololo Independence Grounds in the heart of Kampala on Sunday.
The Female marathon winner in 2011, Lucy Massaquoi, will participate in the 3-mile race, and the current 1,500 and 5,000 male champion Andrew, will run in the 5-mile competition.

The duo was picked after the 2017 National Open Club Championship held in the Fendell Community on the outskirt of Monrovia. According to Coach Samuel Cooper, their training include half marathon, 10km, 5km, long sprint, transitional run and other mixed training. The athletes are been managed by a team of five to ably represent the country as required by the IAAF. Meanwhile, Kampala will be the fourth African city in the history of the IAAF World Cross Championships to host the tournament after Guiyang of China passed the baton in 2015.

The winner of the 2017 Kampala IAAF World Cross Country Championships will walk away with US$30,000 (Ugx105 million). Over 50 countries have so far confirmed their participation in Kampala for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Kampala 2017.

Other African countries expected includes Gambia, Morocco, Algeria, Comoros, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and hosts Uganda, outside Africa include Iraq, Great Britain, Japan, Canada, China, Australia, Brazil, Peru, France, Spain, Italy and Sri Lanka.
