Liberians must respect rule of law

The former first vice chairman of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) Rev. KortuBrown, has underscored a need for Liberians to uphold the rules of law.

He says Liberia is not a country of men, but a country of law, saying “We are all Liberians and the rule of law needs to be respected by us all.” Speaking on a local radio station on Wednesday, 17 May he said Liberians need to uphold the rule of law particularly the five basic rules of law that talk about consolidating peace, amongst others.

The clergyman also notes that Liberia is a founding member of the United Nations, lead founder of the African Union and also a lead founder of ECOWAS, therefore, it should remain a law-abiding country.

“Liberia has not had this type of election for 73 years where the sitting President will turn over to an elected President. The last time was when former President James Barclay turned over to William V.S. Tubman, adding that it is a historical time in our country so it is important that Liberians focus on the rule of law.”

“It’s important that we all hold together, we should go beyond the desire to aspire for whatever position , the rules must be abided by so that we can have a strong country, if you don’t win this time, you can win another time, but let the law be respected.” He added.

In an apparent reference to the Code of Conduct for public officials here, Rev. Brown continues that if the Supreme Court legitimizes a law and some are opting to have it set aside for the impeding elections, other laws could be similarly relegated for selfish reasons after the elections, saying it is now that we should respect the rule of law as we look forward for elections in October.”
