Liberty Party Karate Lawmaker resigns

After coming under intense condemnation for boxing a colleague lawmaker in the House of Representative last week, Liberty Party Margibi County Representative, Roland Opee Cooper, has resigned from the party.

Speaking at the party headquarters Tuesday, Liberty Party chairman Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, said Representative Cooper resigned because he does not want to be subjected to rules and regulation governing the party.

He said the party accepts Cooper’s resignation and has reserved opinion on his decision to quit.

Chairman Fonati said the party’s by-law states that any member caught in misconduct should face suspension and subsequently be turned over to the Executive Committee.

Cllr Koffa said it is a loss to the party to have a member quit, but equally so the Liberty Party will not endorse any misconduct from any of its member. “I cannot protect anyone who misbehaves all in the name of protecting a seat”, he said.

He said the party will not go further to investigate Cooper’s case of misconduct at the Legislature because he has resigned and is no more a member of the Liberty Party.

Chairman Koffa said the Liberty Party expects all of its members to conduct themselves orderly, the same manner in which the party conducts itself, saying that the LP is an orderly and respectful party.
