LIS chief faces contempt charge

Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) Commissioner General Col. Lemuel Reeves has been summoned by the Monrovia City Court to answer to contempt charges for his failure to turn over to the court seven LIS personnel facing criminal charges.

LIS personnel defendants Melvin Stewart, Sylvester, Mamie, Jones Scott, Forkpa, Choloplay and Tonia are listed in a theft of property, criminal mischief and burglary case filed by complaint Bubu Tarawaly.

A writ of summons dated 1 August commands Col. Reeves to show sufficient reason why he should not be held in contempt of court “for his deliberate refusal and failure” to turn over to court criminal defendants in the employ of the LIS to answer to criminal charges brought against them.

“You are hereby commanded to summon Counselor Lemuel E. Reeves, Commissioner of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) Respondent (s) and him to appear before the Stipendiary Magistrate or any other Magistrate of the Monrovia City Court, Temple of Justice, Monrovia, Liberia on the 3rd day of August A.D. 2018 at the Hour of 10:00am,” the writ of summons says in part.

The Court wants the LIS Chief to appear to answer to contempt charges based upon the oath and complaint of the Republic of Liberia by and through the Ministerial Officer, Monrovia City Court.

The writ of summons says it is substantially alleged that having earlier being ordered to turn over the defendants who are LIS personnel and charged criminally, the respondent in defiance of such order failed and refused to turn over the LIS personnel.
